Additional Insight for Psychiatric Medication Decisions

Finding a psychiatric medication that works well for you can sometimes take time. Your symptoms, medical history, other medications, previous treatment experiences, and individual response all play a role in choosing an appropriate treatment. At Guarded Mind Psychiatry LLC, GeneSight® testing can provide additional genetic information that may be considered alongside these clinical factors when medication decisions are being made.

Understanding GeneSight®

GeneSight® is a pharmacogenomic test that examines specific genetic information related to how your body may process or respond to certain psychiatric medications.

The test does not diagnose a mental health condition or tell your provider exactly which medication will work for you. Instead, it offers additional information that may be useful when considered as part of a comprehensive evaluation.

What the Testing Process Involves

GeneSight® testing uses a simple, noninvasive cheek swab. Your sample is collected and sent to a specialized laboratory for analysis.

Once the testing is complete, your provider receives a report containing information about certain gene-drug interactions. Your provider can then discuss the findings with you and explain how they may relate to your current treatment considerations.

How the Results Fit Into Your Care

Genetic information is only one piece of the treatment picture. Your provider considers your GeneSight® results alongside factors such as:

  • Your current symptoms
  • Medical and psychiatric history
  • Current medications
  • Previous medication experiences
  • Side effects you may have experienced
  • Your individual treatment goals

Looking at these factors together allows medication decisions to remain grounded in your overall clinical needs.

When Testing May Be Considered

GeneSight® testing is not necessary for everyone. Your provider may consider it when medication selection is more complex or when additional information could be useful.

For example, testing may be discussed when someone has experienced unwanted medication side effects, limited improvement with previous medications, or several medication trials without achieving the desired response.

Whether testing is appropriate is determined on an individual basis.

Conditions Where Testing May Be Relevant

When clinically appropriate, GeneSight® testing may be considered as part of medication planning for individuals receiving psychiatric care for concerns such as:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety disorders
  • ADHD
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Other behavioral health conditions

The relevance of testing depends on your individual treatment situation.

What GeneSight® Can—and Cannot—Tell You

GeneSight® can provide information about genetic factors associated with certain medication interactions and metabolism. However, genetic testing cannot predict with certainty whether a medication will work for you or eliminate the need for clinical judgment.

Your provider uses the results as an additional resource rather than making treatment decisions based on genetic information alone.

Personalized Decisions, One Person at a Time

The purpose of GeneSight® testing is to add information—not replace the conversation between you and your provider. Your symptoms, experiences, preferences, and treatment goals remain important parts of every medication decision.

If GeneSight® testing is appropriate for your situation, your provider can explain the process, review the results with you, and discuss how the information may fit into your overall care plan.
